April 2008 Michael J. Iacopino Serves New Hampshire as Point Man on Criminal Justice Issues At BCL&I we are accustomed to media requests for Mike Iacopino’s insight and opinion on some of the most important criminal justice issues in New Hampshire. Recently he was interviewed by New Hampshire Public Radio on the fairness of jury selection procedures in a capital murder case. A transcript of the piece as well as a recording can be found here: http://www.nhpr.org/node/15763

Iacopino’s insight has also been relied upon by the New Hampshire House of Representatives. In the 2008 legislative session the New Hampshire Senate adopted a bill that would apply enhanced penalties to all members of criminal street gangs. The Bill was poorly written and overbroad. Mike presented both written and oral testimony before the House of Representatives, Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee recommending that the Committee focus their efforts on gang leaders and organizers. Such an approach minimized the broad and unconstitutional sweep of the proposed legislation. This approach, dubbed the “Iacopino Amendment” by some lawmakers was adopted by the Committee. The Committee recommended that the Amendment be passed by the entire House of Representatives. See the April 10, 2008, Concord Monitor article on this matter here:
